Laser Hair Removal
Facial and body hair removal has become quite popular in the last two years. Hair removal was never a very complicated procedure. Options other than laser hair removal include shaving, waxing, plucking, electrolysis, and applied depilatory creams. Other than electrolysis, these methods have to be repeated often. While electrolysis is a more long-term form of hair removal, it is tedious and expensive. Now, both men and women can achieve permanent hair reduction through laser hair removal.
The key to effective laser hair removal is twofold. Your skin and hair type must be matched with the proper medical laser, and the person performing your hair removal must have adequate experience in its use. At Cosmetic Laser Services, we have four entirely different lasers that can be used to make your treatment fast and effective. All of our practitioners are registered nurses and have been physician-trained and are required to enhance their knowledge through continuing education.
With laser hair removal, most people can successfully get rid of 90% or more of unwanted hair and are very happy with their new, smoother look. You can expect that you will need several treatments to get the best results. The number of treatments will vary with the areas treated and the type of hair to be removed. Women most often treat the lip and chin, bikini line, legs, underarms, and around the navel. Men usually treat the back, shoulders, and upper arms.
About the Procedure
Laser hair removal can take anywhere from five minutes (to remove hair on the lip) to forty-five minutes (to remove hair on the back and shoulders) depending on the area treated. During the treatment, you may experience a slight tingling sensation that most patients tolerate well. We will also cool your skin during the treatments, which also helps to reduce any discomfort. Whether your hair removal takes a few minutes or the better part of an hour, you can plan to return to work or to your normal daily routine immediately. However, it is important that the treated areas are shielded from the sun. You may use a sun block for this protection.
The laser light achieves hair removal by destroying hair at its source, the base of the follicle under the skin. The laser will shoot a concentrated beam of light that passes through your surface skin and is preferentially absorbed at the base of the hair shaft. When the light is absorbed, it is converted to heat, a process that is similar to what happens inside a car that has been sitting in the sun. As the sun shines light into the car, the light is absorbed by the seats, wheel, and dashboard. It is then converted to heat, making them hot to the touch. The same happens to the hair shaft. Once the base of the hair follicle heats up, the ability to grow new hair is destroyed.
Only hair in the active phase of growth can be effectively and permanently removed. Only a fraction of your hair follicles are in the active phase at any time. Thus, most people need multiple (usually 5-10) treatments to get the desired permanent effect.
The risks involved with laser hair removal are minimal. Your eyes will be shielded to avoid injury. There is a small risk of pigment changes and we rarely see any blisters. Our aestheticians and physicians are trained to calibrate the laser to each individual's skin type because everyone reacts differently to the beam. You will be provided with any further information you need during your consultation regarding lasers and any risks associated with laser hair removal.

Who can be treated by Cosmetic Laser Services?
Longer wavelength allows the laser to treat all skin tones including African American, Asian, Indian, Hispanic, and Caucasian. Cosmetic Laser Services can even treat people with a suntan. You can now be treated all year long, and do not have to wait for your tan to fade.
What areas can be treated by Cosmetic Laser Services?
The laser can remove hair from all parts of the body including the face, legs, arms, underarms, and back. It can also treat sensitive areas like the chest, nipples and bikini line.
What do Cosmetic Laser Services treatments feel like?
Cosmetic Laser Services hand piece cools and sooths as it glides along your skin. When the pulse light is delivered, some people experience a mild pinching or stinging sensation. No local anesthesia or pain medication is typically required, however some people may prefer to use a topical anesthetic when sensitive areas are treated.
How many treatments will be needed?
Most areas require 5-10 treatments, but the number of Cosmetic Laser Services treatments you may require for optimal long term benefits depends on various factors such as your hair's thickness, the area treated, on your hair's growth cycle. Interestingly, not all hairs are actively growing at the same time, but actually go through three distinct phases: growth, regression, and resting. Cosmetic Laser Services laser works by disabling the hair that is principally in the active growth phase at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter this active growth phase at different times, additional treatments may be necessary to disable all of the hair follicles in a given area.
What happens after the treatment?
Immediately following your Cosmetic Laser Services treatments, the area may appear a bit red and swollen. Around 3-7 days after treatment you may experience what seems to be re growth of hair. Actually most of these hairs are being shed as a result of your treatment, and are not regrowing. In between treatments you should not wax or pluck your hair, but it is permissible to shave.
Are there any restrictions after treatments?
Following your treatments you can return to your normal activities right away. However, since some redness may occur, you may want to plan your work or social engagements accordingly. The use of sunscreen is recommended on any treated areas exposed to the sun. As always it is a good idea to limit your sun exposure.
What are the possible side effects?
Slight reddening and local swelling of the skin, similar to a sunburn may occur in some persons. These effects typically last for several hours or less. In rare instances, blistering may occur. Consult with your medical professional for complete information on the benefits and risks of treatment.
How long do the results last?
The Cosmetic Laser Services treatments cause permanent reduction in the number of hairs growing in an area. Because hair grows in three phases, and each hair goes through these phases independently, it is almost impossible for one laser treatment to permanently reduce all the hair in a given area. Clinical studies which have followed people for one year after completing treatments, have shown that reduction in hair growth was stable for the duration of that time. While individual results may vary, people typically find that it takes 3 to 6 treatments to get the desired results.
How does Cosmetic Laser Services compare with other hair removal methods?
Shaving, waxing, and depilatory creams are all temporary methods which must be repeated on a frequent basis. Cosmetic Laser Services offers longer lasting results for your hair removal needs.
How does Cosmetic Laser Services compare with electrolysis?
Electrolysis is a tedious, invasive and painful process that involves inserting a needle into each individual hair follicle, and delivering an electrical charge to them one at a time. Electrolysis often requires years of treatment at regular intervals. By delivering light energy to hundreds of hair follicles at a time, our laser effectively treats an area that would take over an hour with electrolysis, in just seconds.
Why choose the Cosmetic Laser Services Laser System over other laser hair removal systems?
Using the latest technology in laser hair removal, our Laser System can rapidly treat large areas without the limitations of older technologies. The longer wavelength allows it to be used safely and effectively on people with light or dark skin as well as tanned skin. A unique feature is that it can be used on fine dark hair in addition to course hair. Its cooled hand piece increases client comfort and minimizes the adverse skin reaction commonly seen with other lasers.
Rosacea Treatments
Rosacea is a disorder of the face that results in redness, prominent blood vessels, swelling of pores, and skin eruptions similar to acne. Also called "adult acne", the cause of rosacea is unknown. It occurs most often in fair skinned people, particularly those who blush easily. Women are more commonly affected, although men are more severely affected. Symptoms usually begin to appear between ages 30 to 50, and the disorder is most often seen in middle-aged or older people.
While rosacea cannot be cured, its symptoms can be controlled and your appearance can be treated. The best way to control rosacea is to avoid the triggering events such as prolonged periods of sun exposure, nicotine, caffeine, and alcohol. Heat and rich foods can also contribute to the effects of rosacea. While topical creams may help control rosacea, the best way to improve your appearance is with light-based treatments such as intense pulsed light and laser. Treatments must be individualized depending on the severity of your condition and the symptoms you want treated. At Cosmetic Laser Services our registered nurses will design a treatment plan to meet your needs. Armed with a variety of laser and light-based equipment, the redness, broken capillaries, and enlarged blood vessels can often be reduced in only a few visits.
Spider Vein Therapy
Spider veins, or Telangiactasias, are those small, red, pink and blue blood vessels that appear most frequently on the face and legs. In contrast, Varicose Veins, are usually larger in diameter and may appear raised with a bluish color. These veins may be related to a more serious vascular disorder, and require careful evaluation by your doctor prior to treatment with the Cosmetic Laser Services Laser.
It is estimated that over 50 million Americans are bothered by the appearance of veins on their thighs, calves, and ankles. These veins can either be small, thin capillaries (spider veins) or larger veins that we call reticular veins. The very largest veins are called varicose veins. There are many factors that contribute to the development of these unsightly veins including pregnancy, weight gain, prolonged standing, and even genetics.
Spider veins form when excess blood backs up in the blood stream. The body releases this pressure by developing new veins. Not only are spider veins unsightly, but they can also cause aching, swelling, burning, and night cramps in the legs. Reticular veins are those blue veins that lie well below the skin's surface and are larger than the spider veins. They often are the source of spider veins and must also be removed in order to achieve a long-term result in your treatment. Finally, varicose veins are quite large, and tend to bulge with a rope-like texture on the skin's surface. They are likely to cause pain and be related to more serious vein disorders. The treatment of varicose veins is usually outside the realm of treatments available at Cosmetic Laser Services and are best treated by a vascular surgeon.
Sclerotherapy is a tedious process which involves injecting each vein, but Cosmetic Laser Services treatments involve no painful injections!
Used by many leaders in the medical field, Cosmetic Laser Services laser has a special adjustable handpiece that allows your practitioner to customize the treatment to your vein removal needs.
Who can be treated with Cosmetic Laser Services?
Cosmetic Laser Services laser has a unique design and long wavelength which allow it to treat people of all skin tones. Your practitioner will advise you if laser treatments are right for you.
What areas can be treated by Cosmetic Laser Services?
Our system can remove unsightly veins from all parts of the body. It can even treat sensitive areas like the face and behind the knees.
What do Cosmetic Laser Services treatments feel like?
The Cosmetic Laser Services laser hand piece cools and sooths as it glides along your skin. The laser delivers pulses of light energy which cause the blood within the vein to coagulate, eventually destroying the vessels. The laser treats the targeted vessels, leaving the surrounding tissue intact. Treatments usually take several minutes, depending on the number of vessels treated and their location. Most people experience a stinging sensation as the pulses of energy are delivered through the handpiece. Although no local anesthesia or pain medication is typically required, many people opt to use a topical anesthetic prior to treatment. Following the treatment, the pain is minimal to nonexistent.
How many treatments do I need?
Often, people find that one treatment is sufficient for their vein removal needs. However, for optimal results, multiple treatments may be necessary. The number of treatments necessary depends on the number of vessels being treated, and the color and size of those vessels. Since individual results vary, ask your medical professional about your specific condition.
What are possible side effects?
Although many people report few if any side effect, those most commonly noticed are slight reddening and local swelling of the skin. These effects typically last for 24 hours or less. Some people may experience bruising, and in rare instances, blistering may occur. Consult with your medical professional for complete information on the benefits and risks of treatment.
Are there any restrictions after treatments?
Following your treatments you can generally return to your normal activities right away. However, it is recommended that you avoid vigorous activities such as strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours after treatment. For people who treat their legs, your practitioner may advise you to avoid hot baths. The use of sunscreen is recommended on any treated areas exposed to the sun. As always, it is a good idea to limit your sun exposure.
Facial Rejuvenation
Aging and sun-damaged skin now can have a more vibrant, healthy appearance by taking advantage of the newest technology - non-ablative laser resurfacing. Non-ablative means no burning and no wounding. This means no recovery time, return to your normal activities immediately!
Non-ablative laser treatment delivers pulses of light to the skin. The light is absorbed by tiny blood vessels in the skin. This stimulates cells called fibroblasts, which triggers the formation of collagen. Loss of collagen is one of the factors that diminishes skin tone and causes wrinkles. After the age of 40, collagen may be lost at the rate of 1% per year. Other factors include sun-damage, hormones, smoking, and alcohol. As the collagen is replenished, it fills in the cracks and voids of wrinkles, giving your skin more texture and a smoother appearance.
What to expect:
Treatments can last from 10-30 minutes, depending on the area treated. There is no pain, you may feel a tingling in the skin that gradually becomes warm. This will make the skin turn slightly red, almost like a mild sunburn. This will last for several hours. Moisturizer and make-up can be applied right after your treatment
Because the new collagen takes time to develop, the full response from a single treatment may not be seen for up to 60 days. Several treatments spaced 2 - 4 weeks apart are suggested to get the full benefit of laser rejuvenation therapy.
Pre and Post Treatment Instructions:
Don't actively suntan 3 days prior to treatment.
Avoid direct sun for 1 - 2 days. Use sunscreen daily.
Avoid hot water for 48 hours. Wash face with cool water.
Apply moisturizer after cleaning.
Do not use Vitamin C, Retin-A products, or Alpha-Hydroxy for 48 hours.
Do not exfoliate the skin for a week post treatment.
Do not wax or tweeze for 2-3 days in the treated area.
